I teach courses on economics, data science and writing. Where possible I try to make the resources open-source. If you are a current student the most up-to-date materials are also available via the university.

Economics

A course on economics designed for mid-career learners. We discuss the nuts and bolts of economics – from demand and supply to inflation and interest rates. The course is different in two respects. First, policy: each week we consider a live policy choice that governments face. Second, country coverage: by taking this course you will learn about the P20 – the 20 most populous nations on the planet. This means we ignore small G20 nations (Italy) and cover huge non-G20 nations (Congo, Bangladesh). [If you are an Italian student I apologise: here is some proof that I do love Italy].

Data Science

This course aims to equip you with the skills you will need as a modern user of data. The focus is on using APIs, automated policy analysis, and visualisation.

Masterclass: writing

A course that Romesh Vaitilingam and I have designed. Offered for policy economists as part of the Economics Observatory project. If you are a public servant and would like to take this course, please get in touch with the Observatory’s office: office@economicsobservatory.com.

Masterclass: data

A one-day course designed with the Data Team at the Economics Observatory project. More details, including some code to get you going, can be found on the course site. If you would like to take this course, please get in touch.

Economics for Everyone

A course on macroeconomics that I designed alongside Greg Kaplan. Part of the “E4E” program launched by John List and Steve Levitt. Lots of open-source materials are avaiable on the site: https://econ4everyone.uchicago.edu.

Communicating Economics

I’m a guest lecturer for parts of this course, launched by Sarah Smith and Christian Spielmann at the University of Bristol.
